SODECAO in Ebolowa: Positive Outcomes and New Perspectives

Achieving positive results and paving the way for enhanced production amid field challenges
From May 14 to 15, 2025, Ebolowa played host to a delegation from SODECAO, led by its General Manager accompanied by his key collaborators and administrators. This significant event served as a platform to assess achievements on the ground and tackle future challenges. In a region where agriculture is vital, the visit facilitated a thorough evaluation of ongoing initiatives and the development of promising strategies. The delegation aimed to achieve two primary objectives:
Assessment of Field Operation,
The primary objective was to review activities in the iconic seed fields of Nkoemvone. This involved assessing the production of cocoa seedlings, banana plantain seedlings, seed pods in the fields, the functionality of irrigation systems in nurseries and fields, as well as the condition of the parcel road network.
The Functionality of Irrigation Systems,
Regarding the functionality of irrigation systems Regarding the functionality of irrigation systems, the goal was to assess the operability of ongoing activities, particularly the irrigation system at the Nkoemvone nursery. This initiative offered the administrators key insights into the challenges faced on the ground. Developed in-house by the technical teams of SODECAO, it is part of the minimum objective agreement between the State and SODECAO for the 2022 fiscal year. The innovative irrigation system utilizes a borehole equipped with a solar pump, aiming to minimize plant losses during the dry season and mitigate issues related to conventional energy shortages. Additionally, administrators inspected a 20-kilometer network of access roads to ensure that seed fields remain accessible. This hands-on approach underscores the commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity in the region.
Plant Production and Associated Challenges,
In area of plant production, key steps in the cultivation of certified cocoa and banana plantain seedlings were outlined. The Director of Cocoa Support emphasized the objectives of the Nkoemvone Centre this season, highlighting the continuity of cocoa seedling production. Favorable climatic conditions and the established irrigation systems have ensured a consistent supply of seed pods throughout the year. This robust framework aims to address the challenges associated with plant production, reinforcing the centre’s commitment to agricultural sustainability.
However, several constraints have been identified, particularly difficulties in sourcing materials due to budget constraints. It has been suggested to reassess this budget in light of rising material costs and to prioritize the construction of nurseries using durable materials instead of temporary ones. This strategic shift could enhance the sustainability and effectiveness of plant production efforts moving forward.
In terms of seed pod production, which is central to the Nkoemvone Centre's activities, the Deputy Director of Orchard Development at DAC highlighted the importance of manual pollination. While this practice is essential for enhancing genetic variability, it faces various challenges, including a significant demand for labour, compounded by an aging workforce. Despite these obstacles, substantial improvements have been recorded this season, with production rising to 360,000 seed pods, up from 192,000 last season. This increase is largely attributed to the effective functioning of the irrigation system for the seed plots.
Administrators’ Satisfaction and Future Outlook,
At the end of the visit, the administrators expressed their satisfaction with the results achieved by SODECAO and acknowledged the relevance of the challenges discussed, committing to finding suitable solutions to that effect.
Another key objective of the visit to Ebolowa was holding of the 87thth Ordinary Session of the Board of Directors, which went on smoothly, resulting in the adoption of key resolutions for the effective functioning of the company.
This trip to Ebolowa ended on a positive note, marked by an encouraging assessment and resolutions that inspire hope for SODECAO's future. The General Manager, in close collaboration with the Board, is firmly committed to transforming these ambitions into tangible outcomes. Their shared resolve to address challenges and optimize available resources reflects an unwavering commitment to building a sustainable future for cocoa production in Cameroon. Together, they aim to make these commitments a reality, strengthening the sector and ensuring prosperous development for all.
