Sustainable cocoa farming

La cacaoculture durable est un concept qui renvoie à plusieurs facettes. De nos jours, il s’étend au-delà de la rentabilité pour embrasser d’autres piliers socio-économiques tels que la protection des forêts et régénération des paysages, l’approche genre et le respect des droits des femmes, la productivité des exploitations et le revenu vital des exploitants, la surveillance du travail des enfants et la protection des droits de l’enfance et de la traçabilité physique.

SODECAO acts on many of these levers to contribute to the sustainability of the sector:

Forest protection and landscape regeneration SODECAO encourages intensive agroforestry, which makes it possible to conserve trees when setting up a cocoa farm, and raises awareness among cocoa farmers of the need to create farms only in non-permanent forest areas and to restore degraded forests by planting shade trees. .

Gender approach and respect for women's rights: raising awareness among women about the economic empowerment potential of the cocoa sector, support for women wishing to create a cocoa farm (donation of plants, advice on space planning, donation of small equipment and agricultural inputs);

Productivité des exploitations agricoles et le revenu vital des exploitants : technical capacity building of producers on GAP, distribution of quality plant material, promotion of diversification through the production and distribution of plantain seedlings, dissemination of agronomic innovations such as small-scale irrigation, structuring of producers within organizations to encourage creating economies of scale

Monitoring child labour : raising awareness among producers on the prohibition of child labour on cocoa farms, the official ban relating to children under the age of 21.

La traçabilité physique : la SODECAO met à la disposition des producteurs des plants certifiés dont l’origine physique (champs semenciers) et génétique (clones présents dans les champs semenciers ) sont connues et traçables. Ainsi, les producteurs ayant créé des exploitations avec du matériel végétal de la SODECAO sont capables remonter jusqu’au matériel végétal l’itinéraire de leurs productions.
